Reed canyon is a 28-acre watershed in the heart of the campus. Home to a growing population of wildlife and native plants, the watershed includes the headwaters of Crystal Springs Creek, a tributary of the Johnson Creek Watershed, and Reed Lake, which has been deemed the oldest naturally occurring lake in Portland. Reed College is currently working on the second phase of their large-scale project to restore the creek and canyon area and enhance wildlife habitat. Phase 1 of the project, initiated in 2001, involved the construction of a fish ladder/fishway that reconnects the lake and the lower creek. Phase 2 of the project includes replacement of the culvert, re-meandering Crystal Springs Creek, adding pools, riffles and overhanging wood, wetlands, Oak prairie and riparian buffer planting. The project sites associated with Phases 1 and 2 will be visited and described.
Dennis O’Connor has over 30 years experience as a restoration ecologist. As related to the Reed College project, Dennis prepared an enhancement strategy, which included non-native species management and native plant revegetation. He has assisted with project management, permit writing, monitoring, revegetating the new fishway and fish ladder, grant writing and restoration of the native plant communities. Phase 2, Dennis is involved with the design of the 400 foot realigned creek and plant communities, and permitting, and will conduct project oversight and erosion control monitoring this summer, during construction.
