The ASCE chapter at the University of Portland focuses on connecting civil engineering students to local professionals so that students can learn more about the profession and future career options.
The club also provides opportunities for networking and professional development to students through these interactions. In the past year, the UP chapter has participated in the Concrete Canoe Competition at the Regional ASCE Conference, organized Meet a CE Day for Portland students and professionals, volunteered at Tryon Creek State Park, and toured the construction site of Dundon-Berchtold Hall, the University of Portland's newest academic building.
This year, we hope to increase member participation, especially with underclassmen.
To do this, we plan to visit classes that are specifically freshman and sophomore classes to advertise our club and its activities. We are also planning to organize activities to encourage underclassmen participation. For example, we are thinking of starting a mentorship program for incoming freshmen students to connect them with a junior or senior student.
