The PSU chapter had a highly successful performance at the regional conference this year.
They won first place in three out of the four competitive events: the Mead Technical Paper Presentation, Environmental Water Filter Competition and Steel Bridge.
Katherine Keeling did an amazing job writing, presenting and answering questions regarding her paper on engineering ethics and social media. The water filter created led by environmental team captain Jeff Pryor, produced the cleanest water while minimizing overall costs. The steel bridge's unique design and assembly led by Team Captain Polina Polikakhina contributed to winning the overall competition thus qualifying for nationals for the first time since 2012.
Currently, the team is working on improving their assembly in order to minimize errors and maximize speed for the competition in Urbana Champaign. With a brand new team this year, Concrete Canoe members learned a lot about concrete design and construction. The Portland State team deviated from its former unique origami design to create a sleek aerodynamic canoe. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the canoe races were cancelled but the Concrete Canoe team plans on taking out the canoe on the Willamette this spring.
Overall, PSU chapter had an amazing time at the conference and are already looking forward to improving for the following year!
